Not too sure... I do know that when Bill Clinton faced his impeachment that there were some Democrats voting for impeachment... It was not enough to make it succeed, but still... Of course, Clinton's impeachment was downright ridiculous as it was only about lying/perjury about sexual contact with a female co-worker... Like the nation is gonna suffer on that one... And the last impeachment before that was never completed since the president already resigned before the impeachment's investigation could fully start. Now Nixon was pardoned afterward by Ford, and that lead to very great protest demonstrations, but Nixon's time was different. Since the scars of WWII were more fresh then, people were more aware of the dangers polarization, and democrats and republicans were not on such war terms as they are now. There was also no internet on which any fool can just put whatever they want without thinking or taking responsibility for the consequences, and thus the republicans are not willing to take risks out of fear of electoral suicide... The Democrats on the other hand KNEW that impeaching Trump was risky and that it could lead to either victory in the next elections but also to electoral suicide, and although the outcome in polls (whatever they are worth) do not seem to be forgiving they do push through...
Although, maybe it's just me, but even without Trump I'm seeing that the Republicans appear more interested to bash down whatever the Democrats do, regardless if the idea fits in the policy of the Republican party, and regardless if the national interest is served with that... And it appears the Democrats are still trying to put the national interest first, but are more and more playing along in bashing down whatever the Republicans say and do, and if that's how the two big U.S. parties operate, it makes me worry about the future of the U.S., but "MAGA" will be impossible that way, I tell ya.
Funny thing is, Trump's reasoning that the EU should stop depending on the U.S. was not new. Obama said it before, but in a far more subtle way, making it easily forgotten. Perhaps if we can show that to Trump supporters and Trump himself he'll do anything to make the EU more dependent just because Obama said it and Trump agreeing with Obama on something would be unthinkable, eh? And if I really turn Trump's and Obama's agendas upside down we might see more similarities, and of course also more differences. But I wonder.. what is gonna happen AFTER Trump?
