Don't mistake not taking the bait with not caring but I will explain. Since I have been making memes I get three main types of comments: The most common (by far) are angry trolls that seek me out to curse, down vote and attempt to start drama, many down vote even the memes they like. I trigger a few for fun but mostly ignore them. Then there are the fans (I think there are 4) they upvote and say something positive and move on. I do try and thank as many as I can. Lastly, there is a very small group that will respond with a comment worthy of an answer. I look forward to those, a few I am 180 degrees removed from politically but I like to hear why they feel as they do. Those are also the only ones that I will comment on their memes although I do up vote some of the others.
As for why I make them, when facebook was still a thing, I always laughed at memes and wondered if I could make some, the rest is history. I only did funny (at least to me) ones at the start, the more political ones I started when I saw how many people only saw one side of the issues. I only make them in the morning while I drink my coffee, I watch the news and comment on what I see. Any responses have to wait until I get home (or never) depending on when I get back. Weekends, I can usually respond to a few comments.
You nailed it with the I generally don't care about a response but that's because the opinion of strangers is not worth seeking out and it is really hard for me to guess if the angry ones are just messing around or really very damaged people.
I mostly make memes to share with my own friends and family, their responses pro or con are why I do so many. It is my way of staying in touch and a quick meme gets them all worked up. In a perfect world, I would sit down and discuss all the issues of the day until well after midnight but who has the time?
Cheers
