General Grievous/Lord Sauron meme

Sauron's spirit didn't die at all, because it is immortal. His body died three times. Isildur cut Sauron's finger and defeated him. Frodo "killed" Sauron by destroying the ring. His spirit was reduced to nothing but a harmless shadow. :-)

Read the "Silmarillion," because (this is not a stab at you) you did not explain that concept correctly.

I've read that Sauron was a Maia, one of the spirits that rank below the Valar in terms of power. He was initially a shapeshifter. In the beginning he assumed a beautiful form, later he took the form of a werewolf, serpent, vampire. Finally he was locked into one body - a humanoid “Dark Lord” form. Eventually he was not able to maintain a physical form at all because he was severely weakened by the loss of the ring.

The Maia was the Valar's servants. Sauron used to serve Orome or Tulkas, but Melkor (basically Satan in this world) tricked Sauron and many other Maia into becoming evil creatures (like the ones that Gandalf and the fellowship ran from in The Mines of Moria).

That sounds like an explanation from Wikipedia. But that is about right.
