Boomers be like

But I think we'll survive it. We've adapted to worse. Absolute worst case scenario, I'll be looking forward to growing oranges in sunny subtropical Wisconsin

Oof, if it really gets that bad and Wisconsin gets subtropical... your orange grove is probably gonna be overrun by climate refugees.

There will be some relative “winners” from climate change but the wrenching disruption to habitats and the world economy will make everyone worse off.

Assuming it does actually get that bad and we don't have civilizations up in space at that point. I believe it's reversible without resorting to drastic measures Greta Thunberg or AOC are proposing, like banning cows or airplanes.

There are a tremendous number of climate change-mitigation strategies we can pursue, aside from banning cows or airplanes (hot-mic moments that are definitely not helpful to the cause).

The one I favor most is a simple economy-wide carbon tax. I think it'd harness the power of the market to make everyone aware of their environmental impact and personally financially interested in reducing it, and we wouldn't have to outright ban anything. The problem is that solution is too much of a compromise that satisfies no one. Nobody on the left or the right gets excited about that particular solution, and there is no truly moderate force to push for it. Hypothetically, a Bloomberg presidency might pursue a carbon tax but I don't see any way for him to win the Democratic primaries.

The problem is that due to tremendous political disagreement -- including over whether anthropogenic climate change exists at all -- we aren't vigorously pursuing any solution at all, and as a result total global emissions are just continuing to rise every year.

The thing about a carbon tax is for it to be effective, it would have to be implemented on a global scale, which China and India are not going to go for. The US and Europe are already heading towards greener practices such as renewable energies, power and water conservation, and electric vehicles. As technology progresses, we are able to find more economically and more ecologically efficient ways to do things. I would consider a carbon tax, but that alone here in the US isn't going to affect much.
