Weren't most if the countries added through beurocracy rather than democratic elections? I think they brought the opposite of democracy.

Yes but thier government would have had to have agreed plus no point in wasting time on referendums

Sure, but the people didn't agree and now they are holding a bunch of elections to determine the best way to exit.
