In my job, we produce construction documents. We have to be extremely particular about spelling. If we misspell something, a client may not trust the rest of our design...if they cant spell, what else did they do wrong?

However, there are several among us that dont spell well...but I wont go so far as to say they are not intelligent, I just think they are not as careful as they should be.

"...if they cant spell, what else did they do wrong?"
that sentiment could apply across a variety of vocations/professions ..and it makes sense that a judgement call on trustworthiness would follow from a lack of attention to details. I think ppl further extrapolate that by adding a competency judgement call -that seems a bit unfair.

Although both are equally important :)

I reserve my pickiness in grammar for work and tend to just get my words out here, lol

I don't think spelling is an accurate measure of intelligence. (my dad is a scientist with 2 doctorates, a patent in some chemical method, has spoken with world leaders all over the globe, has written studies in several scientific journals, yet we tease him constantly that he trips up on spelling the simplest things. (he also has dyslexia which may be a factor) Some people have a knack for it and others don't and with the speed of internet and smart phones now I think misspellings are more because of haste and laziness than anything.

a real live thinking person may feel that commenting on an anonymous post would be silly.
