My understanding is that a Democracy is more a system run by the people as a whole rather than elected officials. However, a democracy can have elected representation assuming all votes are equal in forming that representation.
Near as I can tell, the only thing that makes us a Republic is that we have a President but he does not hold supreme power.
Because we have a system of checks and balances, there is a democracy safeguarding the republic and vice versa.
