My first posting in "Scriptures" needed to be a doozy!

I read Psalm 137 to try to get some context, but was a little confused. I guess God doesn’t like the Edomites much.

Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is the one who repays you
according to what you have done to us.

The passage is a lament for how the Hebrews were treated by their Babylonian captors after being conquered. The writer is wishing a just payback to those who brought this upon their people.

To discourage, or some other reason that is somehow helpful to them?

With respect, your words appeared to be like a malicious Atheist I'm so accustomed to seeing.

I put it up there, and then I broke it down in proper hermeneutic fashion, leaving the dilemma posed and then explained. The only way to deal with someone who has questions in scripture is to at least familiarize oneself with those problematic passages cited and diligently seek to find an answer, all the while being open to the fact that you might not agree with what you find. I've seen this verse recently posted by someone on an atheist page--then answered their query without feeling the need to call them "malicious."

Understood; only that your words "...needed to be a doozy" with an exclamation mark appeared to me as a clear intent to shock anyone who reads it.

And, I did not call you "Malicious" but only the words.

If you've felt that I was name-calling you, my apologies; it's never my intent to do so.

You're fine. I didn't assume you were "calling" me anything, but comparing the use of a problematic passage to how a "malicious atheist" would post if given the opportunity. I was also making a subtle commentary on how we view it when someone posts passages that they have serious problems with when it comes to their view of, in this case, Christianity or Judaism. Assuming someone is being malicious, even if, in some cases they are, taints our response sometimes and prevents a meaningful dialogue from occurring on the off chance that there might be a legitimate concern here, that being answered properly, would further a dialogue. But, for the record, I find these an almost complete waste of time on the internet.
