I read that about 58% of bans are initiated by parents. Should they have a say in what kids are reading?

Question is why is it being banned? I can say yes to books that incite violence as a specific intention. But if you are talking about books showing a view point you simply disagree with, then no. Hiding information to try an "influence" your children show you have a serious lack of faith in them. If you have done your job right as a parent, then your children should grow up able to make up their own minds.

It seems that many books at least as indicated by the sampling above are banned for sexual content or content that is too weighty for youngsters to be reading like suicide. I feel like instead of banning books perhaps there could be a rating system like that of movies. Could have a labeling system like Pg13 or Rated R and have parental authorization or even get carded like for alcohol or cigarette purchases for books that have adult content in them. I agree if you're a good parent your children will make good choices but at what age would you expect them to take knowledge like sex or suicide and make good decisions with it? 10, 13? Young adult literature sometimes assumes more adult wisdom than young people actually have. But I know every child is not the same.

Different children can handle more adult themes than others. How do you tell them apart? I taught my kids about sex rather early on, just as I taught them how to drive safe before they ever got behind the wheel. Now my kids are adults, have good lives, careers and I have two granddaughters. I never told them they couldn't read a book they wanted to read.

The worst behavior I saw in my kid he learned from other kids in school. I had to explain to him why his opinion based on other kids was wrong. And he even already knew it was wrong, but peer pressure is a hellva drug.

Yes, get the lbtg propaganda out of young schoolkids hands.

Who determines what is propaganda? I saw a play in London that was banned in the US because it was labeled propaganda. I liked the play, it was well written, but it never made me want to be an anarchist. (Oh the play was Death of an Anarchist). I was 16 at the time and thanks to my upbringing I was taught to question the message and the messenger. Or Who is saying it and why are they saying it.

You obviously were a smart kid. Alot aren't. Do you know the NPC meme? Some people are literally like that. I'm not for censorship but I really think it's not good to sexualize young kids.

Oh I get that, but don't ban because of sexual content (unless that is the only point of the book). Books for youth rarely bring sex into it anyway. It's when teens start reading books that contain sexual themes that older people freak out. Instead of banning, talk about the book. Ask what they got out of it, what they liked about it.

I'd rather kids be political then sexuallized. And there is no conservative propaganda in schools anymore. It's all liberal. And I wonder how many states actually ban that as opposed to 'Huckleberry Finn'.

The Bible has both liberal and conservative tenets. I was just talking about schools. A parent can watch what a child reads at home, mostly.

That liberals don't care about exposing children to graphic sexual detail?

Liars always hide the truth. Truthers never hide the lie. Simple as that.
