Just so you know, not only are there 12 animals represented by the order they came in a race ordered by the Jade Emperor that represent the 12 year cycle of the calendar. But there is more. Each animal also have a rotation of the elements. Earth Wind and Fire (funky!) Just Kidding, it's Earth, Fire, Metal, Wood and Water. And as it is a lunar calendar, the first of the year changes. I was Born in January, but that year the New Year fell in February, so instead of being a Snake, I was born a Dragon and more precisely a Wood Dragon.

This year January 25th is the start of the Year of the Rat and starts the cycle all over again. Current year is the Year of the Pig. So Timid is a Pig....a Wood Pig.... (It's not an insult! Pigs are a sign of wealth in China!)

It doesn't go by months. It's a 12 year cycle with each year being a sign. Example: 2019 is the Year of the Pig. In twelve years (2031) it will again be the Year of the Pig.

Then there are the 5 elements that expand the the cycle to 60 years. I was born in the Year of the Wood Dragon and the next Year of the Wood Dragon will be when I turn 60 in few years.
