Wow, you really hate religion. Was it a priest or pastor or rabbi that sexually molested you?

Criticism of religion is NOT hatred of religion.

It is when you have a bunch of alts and tediously whine about it constantly.

How do you know they're alts and not just different people who happen to be Atheists?

The stream all of a sudden gets blitzed by noobs whining about religion? I'd say it's fairly likely.

The thing is, though, you can't prove anything. Besides, like I said, criticism of religion isn't hatred.

Those types of laws were common in that period of history. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the same types of laws exist today in that part of the world (the middle east). Some of parts of the world still practice slavery, and honor killings.

Would you rather she was killed, or become a slave? How progressive of you.

That was the alternative back then.

It's funny how you can look down upon the ways of the world and cast judgement without considering what the alternative would be. The biblical world was brutal.

Later in that particular passage offers guidance to the man should he not want to marry the woman - he's instructed not to sell her as a slave and to set her free as she's suffered enough.

Is that immoral to you?

The subject of the meme.

Deuteronomy 21:10-14 English Standard Version (ESV)
Marrying Female Captives
10 “When you go out to war against your enemies, and the Lord your God gives them into your hand and you take them captive, 11 and you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you desire to take her to be your wife, 12 and you bring her home to your house, she shall shave her head and pare her nails. 13 And she shall take off the clothes in which she was captured and shall remain in your house and lament her father and her mother a full month. After that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. 14 But if you no longer delight in her, you shall let her go where she wants. But you shall not sell her for money, nor shall you treat her as a slave, since you have humiliated her.

Was that some kind of weird attempt at a burn?

Judging from the numbers in his username and meme history, I doubt that Timber1972 plays video games.

I can believe it. In the participation-trophy world, people don't know the slightest hardship, so their perspective is skewed. Their world has been padded and safe for their entire life, and so it must have been that way for all time.
0 ups, 5y
It has nothing to do with not knowing hardships, it has EVERYTHING to do with being a good person.

The particular passage specifically says the man is not to treat the woman as a slave.

I love it when you're wrong, and it happens so often. It's like you want to make me happy.

Quick, change course - You can't manage to argue one point successfully, so you switch targets.

Things being a certain way at a certain time doesn't justify them being that way.

Ok, let me put something else to you: Imagine the HORROR of being raped, not only once, but to then have your rapist ENTITLED to do it *again and again* for the rest of your life as THEIR punishment! What a sick joke! And that's because it wasn't illegal for a husband to rape their wife. Make rape illegal? No, the Bible never made it illegal. In fact, the Bible downright SANCTIONED it, it says that the people could marry their prisoners of war. Do you honestly think it wasn't rape that was occurring within the confines of those sham marriages, as if women would desire to have sex with the men who killed their families?

There's no such thing as "presentism". Being a decent, good, and moral human being means condemning immorality.

No, there are little children who have no scientific knowledge, no understanding, and no language to describe the world around them. What happens is a teacher introduces new concepts and new languages to them, thereby broadening their base of knowledge and understanding, and that's just what a fallible human teacher can do. Am I suppose to believe that the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient God, is utterly INCAPABLE of teaching grown adults the ACTUAL meaning of the universe?

You'd be the type who'd say 'Why doesn't God reveal himself to us?' but yet even when the Bible say He did or dropped manna from the sky to sustain them, they still rebelled against Him. You get my point?

Why do we need to know more than what's stated in the Bible? Have you even read it? Studied it?
0 ups, 5y
That's not how belief works. You can't just show up once and expect people from centuries later to believe it happened. If God knew his people would rebel, then why wouldn't he include laws that would speak to the people of the future.

Just think of how remarkable it would be if actual scientific knowledge came from the Bible, clearly THAT would indicate some outside influence, like from a god, for instance.

The Bible uses the same tactics that every other religion uses, a bunch of scrolls and vague prophecies.

Not really. Dipping a living bird in the blood of a dead bird isn't gonna save anybody's lives.

Ya know, that was one of the many things used to argue FOR slavery when it actually was finally challenged and abolished. What if the Bible were to say, with unmistakable clarity, "NEVER own a slave"?

And then the Bible has multiple stories where Yahweh and the Israelites commit multiple acts of murder, rape, torture, and genocide for obscure reasons.

Do you honestly think women would desire to have sex with the men who killed their families?
0 ups, 5y
1. That's bullshit. Do parents get to murder us? No. So why should God be allowed to JUST because he allegedly "gave life"?

2. Slavery is wrong no matter what era.

3. Mass killings are genocide.

4. It's all over the Bible.

5. Honestly, death is the better option.
0 ups, 5y
Ya know, talking to you is like talking to a brick wall.
0 ups, 5y
The Bible itself is very confusing. It fails to properly condemn issues like slavery, rape, and murder. There is too much ambiguity on these issues.
0 ups, 5y
Slavery is wrong in ALL contexts and centuries.
0 ups, 5y
Why not just employ them normally?
0 ups, 5y
What if the Bible were as unambiguous about slavery as it is about working on the Sabbath? The Bible's prohibition on cooking a goat in it's mother's milk is CRYSTAL GO***MN CLEAR, but whether or not the Bible is cool with owning other people can be argued back and forth all the live long day! Funny huh? Priorities, I guess. Despite all this, people eventually decided on their own which of the Bible's laws to follow, and which to ignore. Some people still condemn homosexuality, sure, but then they work all day on the Sabbath. Nobody cares how goats are cooked anymore, despite God himself having allegedly weighed in on it, cherrypicking.
