Almost witnessed an old man plow into two cars as he failed to yield. They swerved and he never looked back.

One grandmother of mine said she would stop whenever we asked her to. The decision was made when she was 93, and she hasn't driven since, and is now 95. My other grandmother however, rest her soul, had the keys forcibly taken at 80ish and she would still find them and sneak and drive...we stopped keeping keys in her house and then and only then did she stop under extreme protest. The whole process was finished eventually with one accident involving another car and both were totalled, and another where she met a pine tree at 45 mph, which totalled another one...she survived both, to be diagnosed with dementia a couple of years later, lived till she was 87.

I think drivers tests should have to be retaken at 65, and every 5 years after that till 80, then every year till no longer able to drive. Might be extra burden on the highway department, but if it saves lives then it's worth it.

I work with a man who's mother drove until she was 90. Then one day she hit a mailbox. No damage to speak of, but she had the owner of the mailbox drive her home and never drove again because she admitted that she never saw the box and it could have been a person.

I get that the ability to drive is a freedom that allows us to travel distances that would be impossible without it, but deciding who is a danger is tricky. My father is showing signs of dementia now, but he also has bad legs and driving has been too painful for him for a couple of years now. My 81 year old mother still drives a standard. Without her being able to drive, they would need a means to get to the stores, to doctor's appointments, to restaurants (they like to eat out).

As a society, we do a little to help with some senior vans, but out where I live you are lucky to book one a week. So not only do we need to stop the too old to drive, but we need the means not to basically lock them in their home.

Also 65 is hardly old puppy. I can understand 70 being an evaluation start date and actual driving tests based on that evaluation.

No, 65 is not old but I'm thinking along the lines of when debilitating conditions begin to manifest. I'd be ok with pushing it to 70, or even 75 if that is when whatever studies there are out there indicate that its time... I'm obviously not an authority on such things, but my point is still that a retest should be done at some point with follow ups to determine when it's time to stop driving.

My 85 yer old father has given up his license, One of my uncles at 87 just traded his manual for an automatic as he says he's too old to shift anymore. My other uncle was 94 when he stopped driving, he had a lead foot and scared the hell out of me!

To be fair there are a lot of bad drivers at all ages. I think the driving test should be done for everyone every 5 years or so
