It depends on who you ask, Ed, but the problem with that theory is that the dollar didn't emerge as the de facto global currency until after World War 2. Prior to the 1940's, the world didn't have the trade deficit with the USA that the war would create.

So there's still 1920-1945 missing as to your explanation as to why 1920 began whatever it is you're talking about. It can't be about the conspiracy theory that major conflicts were about financially rogue countries because that didn't start until at least 1948 if one even believes in it at all.

Well, that's the thing, Ed: it kind of isn't correct, no matter what the year.

In Germany, public schools go back to the 1500's. In Scotland, the 1600's. In the American colonies, states like Massachusetts made education compulsory in the 1600's. All of which predate central banks entirely, and they certainly predate Dollar Diplomacy.

So that's really what I'm getting at: your thesis doesn't make sense unless there's something else on top of that you haven't mentioned. And every time I ask what it is, you come up with an excuse not to answer.

But, every country has their own history of how state schools were shaped into their own modern forms. The United States was actually behind much of the world on this score. So does your view of the problem actually date back long before 1920? Or did something happen SINCE 1920 to bring education outside the United States into line with what the United States wanted?

Even a public school in the center of a metropolitan area looks and feels very different to a public school in the suburb or a public school in the middle of nowhere.
