Well it actually makes sense in a way for you not getting points when someone comments on your meme, because the person might be trying to explain why they disagree with the meme. For example, it might be an inapropriate meme that isn't labeled NSFW, and the person commenting is telling the poster that they should label it next time.

Thats is true

They do help because the more comments a meme gets, it drives it further up the hot pages causing it to get more views and potentially more upvotes because more people see it.
