Thanks to technology we will all be totally illiterate soon enough. First we had spell check. You could see what was misspelled and correct it. Then they introduced the ability to click on the error and get a choice of words with which to correct it. Then we came into having auto correct. You need not know not only that you made an error, but you may also avoid knowing how to correct said error. We also have speech to text. Preventing people from ever needing to know how to spell any words at all. Not to mention text to speech, preventing the need for reading as well.

A lot of people think I am full of it. But this is how it is starting. Give it time. Knowing how to read, write and spell will be for the "have nots" and illiteracy for the "haves". Mark my words.

My kids will not be among the illiterate if I can help it. It really blows my mind how bad it is getting.

your first comment suggests that you're downvoting my meme. your "friendly reminder" comment states a policy that is your own but you make it sound like the general policy on this site. i don't want to be associated with statements like that.

ok i took the downvotes off of your comments, but i want to say that downvoting a meme for spelling errors or typos or other simple mistakes seems a little harsh to me. most people either ignore them or point them out in fun.

When my kid was in school, my wife & I were up at the school so many times over ridiculous teacher stuff. It's crazy how bad things have gotten. Many teachers are just babysitters...bad ones at that.

i think it's a combination of three things mainly. teacher salaries have not kept up with the cost of living, so the job is financially less attractive every year to capable young people. for those who do take it on, they find themselves swamped with bad policies, low standards of student performance, and a lot of red tape. and lastly, teacher training has come to focus more and more on techniques of delivery and philosophy of teaching and less on mastery of material. it's very frustrating because a general solution in any country takes leadership at high levels, and that has been lacking in the USA.
