Explosives have a higher kill chance and shock value than guns. Suicide bombers are proof of that. Psychos use guns to make it personal. To feel power over individuals. If they can't get that, they might use knives or throw acid. But it's always about killing individuals. However, using explosives to defend myself from multiple attackers would be tricky. As would a knife fight. So we use guns for self defense about a million times a year. So no, guns are not better at killing more people faster. Explosives are. People don't like talking about the guy that was leaving explosives on people's porches. You can stop an active shooter. They might not even hit you in a vital spot. But a hidden explosive, or one tossed into a room, is pretty much unavoidable.
