I came home from school one day and my step dad kicked me out. He was a violent alcoholic/drug addict.

i ran in and grabbed the 3 yr old when i saw the car start to move. the car rolled backwards down the hill, across the road and hit a small tree, just big enough to stop it.

When I turned 18, I asked my parents if I could go visit a girl I was semi-dating 2 states away. They said no, and I protested and gave them every reason why they should trust me (I would be staying at her parents house, gave an entire list of things we would be doing as well as where I would be on what day, told them how I could afford to go and pay my own way, assured cell phone would be answered any time of day, gave them contact info for everyone i knew including her parents, brought up the fact that I had never given them a reason not to trust me other than being a teenager, etc.). After a day of thinking about it they agreed, it was sort of like them handing me the reigns for a little while to see if I lost control. But I didn't and after that their trust factor went way up, I had graduated to adulthood.

Did the relationship work out?

No, but like I said we weren't really dating, just good friends that toyed around with the idea of it. It never went anywhere serious.

How so? I'm certainly not, had things worked out differently I would have never met my wife, my life would be completely different and I'm extremely blessed.

I lost my job (owner was also my
Landlord, very understanding on rent) as the business was dying. Now I could have moved home to my parents, but I sucked it up and took a job that meant walking 5 miles each way.

It was very important to me not to have to rely on my parents(they’re rich) and do it all on my own. After all my debts were paid off I did move home, but that was because my parents had moved again and need me to take care of their places until they could sell them.

Very honorable, I admire your spirit for that. There are too many that are fed with a silver spoon that have no idea how to make it on their own.

The first time I whupped my old man. Haha just kidding. Mine was probably the first time I realized that our daughter had grown up to be a fine human being & we did a good job raising her.

That's great, but it took you that long to realize you were an adult?! Dang man! Not knockin' ya, if you were able to raise your daughter up into a fine human being without being an adult then you need to go around giving lessons to everyone in the country...you could be a bagillionaire :)

Well, I guess I should say I felt it was a worthy accomplishment, the most important. As far as feeling like an adult, I felt I was an adult the first time I got a paycheck, but I was very wrong lol.

Gotcha. and right you would be :) Yeah I remember picking up my first paycheck and it was like $300 for a weeks worth of hard labor, lol! But it felt really good to a 16 year old me.

He smiled and told me he’ll tell me when he got there. I asked how old he felt, inside. He said 18. I rolled the clock back 2 years and took life a bit less seriously after that.

I think when I finally got the hang of working at a full-time job. It's very empowering.

There was just something about that responsibility and how it weighed on me I think I grew up almost overnight.
