It is named after Henry F. Phillips, who bought the rights to the cross-shaped recess impression in the head of the screw. It was invented by John P. Thompson, who patented it but was unable to interest manufacturers in it. Thompson sold his design to Phillips, who successfully licensed it to screw manufacturers.
