You left out the part where everyone is getting $12,000 extra a year. A VAT + UBI works. A VAT alone is bad for the consumer.

Where would the money come from though? Remember Universal Basic Income is "Universal". That means everyone will be able to get $1000 from the homeless bums on the street to Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates. Otherwise, it's not universal.

I've done plenty of my own research into UBI. I do actually agree UBI is something we should discuss especially as more and more jobs get automated, and I definitely appreciate that Yang is getting the conversation rolling. However, as Timber1972 pointed out, it is incredibly expensive and that money has to come from somewhere. Corporations will only tolerate getting taxed so much before they just pack up and leave. Even if they don't, they just pass the cost on to the consumer. We should definitely have the conversation, and if we can pay for it without bankrupting the country, I'm all for UBI. However, it's just not something I can see getting implemented right now.

Pack up and leave the USA market... to go to other countries that all have a VAT already in place?

Have you not seen the mass exodus of manufacturing from the US? They have been packing up and going to China, Mexico, Southeast Asia, etc. So many industries have left the US that the southern Great Lakes region is literally called the Rust Belt. The city of Detroit collapsed because they lost their manufacturing plants and have never recovered. I could drive you around my town and show you all the abandoned buildings from when we used to be a industrial powerhouse. So no, you try harder.
