There aren’t many of us it’s true. But I like to think that if people had the same experiences as me they would feel the same way.

My dad is a pro-life Democrat in New York.

I didn't have a judge or lawyer at my wedding. We just had eachother and witnesses. Because marriage is between 2 individuals (I believe a man and a woman) they are the ones to validate it. We had a wedding in a church. We vowed to love eachother through good and bad till death. With God as our witness. It's not a government or social construct, it was given us by God when he created the first man and woman. But I suppose you don't believe in the Bible either.

I think when the joke talks about judges and lawyers it is talking more about divorce than marriage

PREACH! Marriage is the government’s way of increasing the population by paying a man and a woman to be together (through tax cuts) so that they can have a family! Basically, prostitution is illegal even though marriage is a government brothel!

Marriage and prostitution are two whole different things

Marriage is the act of pledging your life to be with your partner, to stay with them till the day you die.

Prostitution is the filthy act of giving away your body, which is a temple, just for mere money!

Don't you dare compare those two things!

I made that ANALogy because, just like prostitution, the government pays you to get married.

I get what you're trying to say, but it's kinda self-contradictory. If the people have to pay the government to be together and have children, wouldn't that be seen as population control instead of population increasement?

Secondly, government does not force people to be married in order to have children. It's a mental control, not physical. People BELIEVE they first have to marry (or in other words, consent to the government and pay them for the invisible priviledge) in order to have a family and children.

I meant because married people get tax cuts. And marriage makes it easier to have children, so once marriage is unsubsidized, having kids will become more difficult.

Because you really love someone enough to share the rest of your life with them, share the ups and downs of everyday with them, want to make a family with them. Basically value someone enough to value only their love in return. It's not for everyone but without it society would not endure.

People could quite happily spend the rest of their lives with someone they loved but, all without getting married.

The difference is that sex for pleasure, unlike procreative sex, doesn’t harm anyone. Ego has to do with how little you care about everyone else, not with how much you care about yourself.

I think the only victim you’re talking about is the child born from premarital sex, which birth control is the obvious solution for!

I guess the question to ask is what's stopping you? If you're willing to give your body to someone and possibly start a family, live day to day, let them see you at your best and your worst, why not just get married since you're already living as husband and wife?

Its not so much a religious act than a total commitment to one person. Perhaps some people aren't willing to give all and need a way out?

Society would do perfectly fine without marriage. One can easily get sick of always loving the same person instead of having lots of friends (male and female) to hang out with for different reasons.

I doubt it! There's plenty of people here with differing views. I think this stream is probably the safest place to have an opinion. The aim here is respect regardless of belief and I'm happy to say with all the traffic here, no one has been disrespectful. :)
