Not to be pedantic... well, okay, to be a little pedantic, I've heard arguments before that race is actually used as a misnomer when referring to humans. In said argument, humans are actually a "species", and race is to humans as breed is to dogs or cats.

That's why there are different observable /external/ phenotypes more commonly found in any given geographical area/environment, even though the internal biology is exactly the same.
