They are with their parents. It's a tourist destination. Sad thing is, most times their parents don't correct them. And it's not just the young kids (i.e. under 5).

maybe some of them are non-english-speaking and 'chicken' is the only word they have for bird?

Wishful thinking. Sad thing is people are getting, in some cases dumber, but it's often just a disconnect with the world around us. Many kids have never been outside the city, and even then rarely go outside. So you might have a point in that chicken is merely the first "farm bird" they think of (as opposed to pigeons).
