I believe there are two quote unquote "crises" going on that people are talking about. A humanitarian one and an immigration one. I believe the Democratic party is referring to the immigration one being fake. Though, there is likely a spike in illegal immigration rates. Therefore, making it easier to become a LEGAL citizen should be more of a priority. The Only reason someone would become an illegal citizen is if legal citizenship is too challenging. Of course, we don't want any random joe and their cousin becoming US citizens, but we also don't want to make people wait 5 years to become a naturalized citizen.
