Yeah, I've never understood how they just push away centuries of science and mountains of peer-reviewed studies.

CENTURIES of science?! Vaccines were only a thing since the 50s, and people have been doing fine (in terms of disease) before then (besides polio, which went extinct because of improved hygiene, not because of vaccines)!

Actually, vaccines were first invented only 20 years after the signing if the Declaration of Independence, in the year 1796 by Edward Jenner, who discovered that people who had previously contracted cowpox didn't ever contract smallpox. Later, on, it was discovered that giving a dead or weakened version of a virus or bacterium allowed one's own immune system to develop an immunity to it in a safe environment, enabling it to protect one's body from said pathogen. These later were perfected to create vaccines to said diseases.

For short-lasting protection, other injections utilize antibodies, which attach to areas on the pathogens known as antigens. These are also the molecules that lymphocyte white blood cells use to tag pathogens, enabling the phagocyte white blood cells to attack and dissolve the pathogen through phagocytosis.

Now I'm just rambling, so I hope the information I provided gave some clarification on the subject. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

You don’t need vaccines to achieve this immunity. Even if those vaccines were fine, nowadays, they can easily be tainted with toxic chemicals.

Right, you don't require them, but I'd rather get a vaccine to develop immunity than contract the disease for the same immunity.

Vaccines cause other diseases and might even intoxicate your immune system.
reply

What research did this come from? Anyway, yes, the entire purpose of a vaccine is to give your immune system the thing you're trying to prevent the person from contracting in the future. If not done properly, it could potentially give you that disease. Yes, it does intoxicate the person, with that disease. The reason the area the vaccine is injected into becomes inflamed is because your immune system is rushing to the scene, trying to learn how to fight the disease, to get it out of your body.

you have not have been exposed to the germs either.

I think that reasonable debte is the best way to a considerate and effective resolution. Vaccines aren't perfect, nothing is, and we've survived millennia without it, but it's a medical miracle that works with our own immune system, and the benefit outweighs any sort of risk, unless there's some sort of allergy or immunocompromisation. If someone is able to get it with little negative effect, they, in my opinion, should, in order to help people who are immunocompromised and could die if they contract the disease. Futhermore, there are incredibly deadly diseases that we've been able to nearly wipe out. If you look at anti-vaccination movements compared with spread of disease, there's a correlation. That being said, you don't have to receive every single vaccine available, but those which allow you to combat diseases which would otherwise kill people are incredibly beneficial to society.

The side effects of vaccines are far more deadly than the diseases are that the vaccines are supposed to prevent.
0 ups, 4m
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't vaccines usually only cause a sore arm for a few days, unless the vaccine is too strong, which is a very low chance? Compare this to measles, polio, etc.

IDK if the polio vaccine is worth it, and it’s no longer relevant. I’m pretty sure that deaths from measles vaccines are far more common than are deaths to measles itself.
0 ups, 4m
Polio, if conrtacted when unvaccinated, will still ravage your body, and it's not as though it's gone extinct. The measles vaccine is 97% effective, with an incredibly small fraction of the remaining 3% contracting it from the vaccine itself. As a matter of fact, there was a measles outbreak in the Portland-Washington area, which is an anti-vaccination "hotspot".

The opposite can be said about the measles outbreak that made California mandate vaccines. It was a location with many vaccinated folks.
0 ups, 4m
At the same time, mandating vaccines caused a decrease in morbidity rates.

Anywho, here's some more information on it.

I haven't had a vaccine in 3, as I'm up to date on my vaccinations. However, I'm going to receive another in several years, in order to maintain immunity to potentially fatal diseases. Additionally, just because you haven't vaccinated in a while doesn't mean your immune system has 'forgotten' how to combat the disease. Technically, the vaccines you recieved 9 years ago are still working in your immune system. Vaccines don't weaken, override, or work along with your immune system. They teach it.

But people are taking the flu shot every year, and I’m perfectly fine without it.

Likewise! I haven't had an influenza vaccine in a few years, either. Even still, vaccinations for more serious diseases are critical in herd immunity, which kills off most of the pathogen.

Most of these diseases weren’t cured by vaccines.
reply

In technicality, none are, as it's said herd immunity and the person's own immune system that prevents propagation, but if you've had the vaccine for something, your body doesn't just randomly stop warding off a disease. It'll continue using the information it received from the vaccine for potentially decades, sometimes even until you die. Children's immune systems, however, are weaker, so they need to 're-learn' how to defend themselves until they 'remember', which is why they receive multiple rounds of a vaccine, and why you don't need as many as an adult.

Well, nothing can be completely prevented. Like you said, pathogens and diseases are going to inevitably get everywhere.

Fetal serum is, in fact, safe, even if it is in vaccines. The reason that it would even be used in the first place is because it is used i. Cell culturing which is essential for the creation of a weakened version of a pathogen, which are the basis for vaccines, as this is how your immune system 'learns' to fight off said pathogen.

The second point is a pet peeve of mine. Elemental mercury is NOT the same as molecular mercury. Yes, it's true that some vaccines used to contain molecules which contain mercury, but unless you think that hydrogen peroxide and water are the same thing, then you can stick with me for this next part. Take, for example, the saltwater in sweat and tears. This contains salt, which has a chemical formula of NaCl, sodium chloride. Chlorine is quite toxic to humans and can kill someone in fairly small amounts. Heck, it was used in mustard gas. Sodium is a metal which is EXPLOSIVE on contact with water. However, put these two incredibly dangerous elements together, and you get a substance we need to survive: salt! The same is true for the mercury that was previously in vaccines. This was in a molecular form that was not harmful to humans. Even still, they've removed this molecule from vaccines in recent years due to concerns, in order to further put people at ease.

I was talking about the same mercury that’s toxic to humans! Also, my point with the fetal tissue is that many people would find it unethical.
reply

Ah, I see. I agree that it's unethical, and we need to find a better alternative.
As for the mercury, it's never in its elemental form, as that WOULD be considered a major safety hazard. That's why we removed it from pretty much everything after people started getting mercury poisoning from thermometers, among other things.

I’m pretty sure the mercury found in vaccines is in its elemental form.

I believe you're referring to thimerosal, which is a compound found in some vaccines, and has a chemical formula of C9H9HgNaO2S. The "Hg" in it is the mercury. As you can see, it is in a molecule, therefore not being elemental mercury. If it were elemental mercury, pretty much everyone receiving the vaccine would die. I just went and researched an article, and, while 14 years outdated, did show that thimerosal did increase mercury content in the body, but not by enough to form any conclusive data. Additionally, thimerosal was phased out in, I believe, 1993.

Then why are folks still suffering from mercury poisoning upon vaccinating? I think what you’re talking about is still different.

I'm confused, are you referring to ethyl mercury?
