The bomb used on Hiroshima used the uranium isotope U-235, which is INCREDIBLY rare. The common isotope, U-238, won't explode.
After the Hiroshima bombing, JAPANESE scientists told the Emperor, "The isotope is SO rare THEY CAN'T POSSIBLY have a SECOND bomb. EVEN IF THEY DO, they DEFINITELY don't have a THIRD bomb. So WORST-CASE SCENARIO is they take out ONE MORE city. But we can handle that."
Actually, a TOTAL of TWO U-235 bombs were built--the first one was the Trinity TEST to make sure the bomb would work.
What the Japanese scientists didn't know was that IN THE PROCESS OF BUILDING THE BOMB the U.S. discovered how to make PLUTONIUM--which is MUCH better for bombs than U-235.
The yield of the Hiroshima bomb was equivalent to 12 kilotons of TNT. The bomb used on Nagasaki was a PLUTONIUM bomb with ALMOST DOUBLE the yield--22 kilotons.
Incidentally, when the U.S. was attacked it IMMEDIATELY arrested ALL the people in the Japanese embassy and consulates. One thing Roosevelt considered was HAVING THE JAPANESE DIPLOMATS ATTEND THE TRINITY TEST and then send them back to Japan to report. That plan was rejected because they decided that the Japanese government would say the diplomats were traitors or spies or liars or brainwashed and would execute them instead of believing them.
