I think the OP should have referred to Federal Income Tax rather than all taxes. Local taxes are necessary to provide for infrastructure and other social requirements.

However, before 1913 we did not have a federal income tax, and yet, we had schools, roads, hospitals, an army, etc. and a prosperous nation.

Ok, so then how do we pay for roads, schools, and other infrastructure without some form of taxation?

What if we didn't have those

Life would be less comfortable and our nation would not prosper as well. Since I can not afford to build all the roads I use, I have no problem chipping in and paying for a part of something that I benefit from.

Too bad the roads are made of shitty materials
