it could just be ignorance. not "Islamophobia" many Americans are pretty stupid, but not bigoted.

also islam IS a religion to be feared due to its violent past and present.

many people dont realize this, but the crusades were retaliatory, they were made to retake areas that were taken over by the Islamic armies. Islam by its very nature is a militaristic religion and people are right to fear it.

The question is straight forward, the only trickery involved is that many people don't know that our numbers are Arabic numbers, and then throw in prevalent Islamaphobia and you get the embarrassing results.

Sorry, you're assuming the Islamaphobia part. Just ignorance making people think your asking for a different system alone would be enough to get those results. I guess it would be tricky to do a controlled experiment. I expect if you asked whether the "Roman Alphabet" should be taught in American schools the response wouldn't be a stark as by Arabic Numerals.

No, it just would a scientific study, rather than a web poll like this one. You should also word the questions so it is clear that the Arabic system is currently being used, and describe what it is. You can even ask the question several different ways to see how people respond to based on wording.
