Well from what I understand, the uproar was so big they're going back in and completely redoing the cgi for him.
Personally, I assume this abomination was to make him look more like an innocent child (which would appeal to SJWs), and less like the devil-may-care, "macho" look he has in the games (which appeals more to" those evil white cis men")
