Change my mind: parents don't know how to discipline kids these days

I got spanked hard growing up. With a wooden spoon on the bare bottom so hard I had welts. I'm never going to go to that extreme with my kids. I find it ironic when I'm yelling at the kids to stop yelling at eachother or when I hit them on the bottom because they hit eachother. Makes no sense to me. I believe kids misbehave because they don't know the rules, they don't understand why rules are in place or something is bothering them (they're hungry tired, depressed, anxious) so better to stop what you're doing and listen to them instead of just outright punishing them.

But you're still in high school. I'm talking about back in the day like when your parents and grandparents were growing up. It seems like now the worst kids face is having their ipad taken from them for a few hours. But they have a cell phone and TV in their room. Imagine a time when kids treated adults with respect. Like you see in old shows like "Leave it to beaver"

I think the lack of respect kids have for their parents has little to do with how they are disciplined and more to do with how they are raised. Kids nowadays are too spoilt. They come to expect that they can have anything they want without having to earn it.

Research has shown that spanking does nothing to improve the bevaviour of a child. It has even been argued that children who are spanked are more likely to engage in anti social behaviour in the future. I don't think its a good idea to instill the idea that violence is an appropriate way to respond to problems.

I agree.

My parents would always explain why they were spanking me before I got spanked, so I would know the consequences for my actions. They also refrained from using their hands, so I would regard the object more than the parents. Obviously, randomly beating your child all of the time isn't the answer, but spanking helps on certain occasions, imo.

Knowing there will be a consequence and having a warning before a punishment is much better than just outright spanking. Good point about not using your hands. Although I now have woodenspoonaphobia now ;)

This is my family's time honored method of discipline, still effective today.
