I notice your standard here can be applied to those that are infirm enough to be"an independent, autonomous being". It can also be applied to those just born. That is often the problem with standard for when a fetus is to be recognized as having the right to live, it can be applied to people that reasonably do have the right to live.

Humans are continually growing and changing, mentally and physically. At our earliest stages we're so fragile and ignorant that it's much safer to remain in our mothers womb.

Are the mentally retarded independent and autonomous? What about the physically handicapped? Should legally authorized family be allowed to make the decision to have them executed by tearing them limb from limb?
