in short:this is a very bad thing.
for a robust and healthy democratic republic to function within the parameters of law,and the rule of law,are a vital requirement.
but during the Obama years,we saw his administration pursue whistleblowers using the "espionage act of 1913" more than any other president..combined.
his administration didn't always win,but they won indirectly.
they crushed anyone who dared step up and expose the criminality of our government.if they could not win legally.the process alone destroyed the careers and livelihood of anyone who was brave enough to step forward and do the right thing.
so the prosecution of Assange is not about treason, espionage or "revealing states secrets".it is for the single purpose of sending a message to any government employee who may come across:criminality, malfeasance or egregious breeches in protocol .
"rat us out and we will f**k you up"
now let me just add a point of consideration:
these employees,be they CIA,NSA or FBI who are stepping forward to reveal the crimes of our government.took an oath, and they are risking everything to expose what our government wants to remain secret.
and they often LOSE everything for stepping up and honoring their oath.
they are patriots.
they are democrats and republicans alike.
and not only do they lose everything, but they are also subjected to the full might, force and resources of the largest and most powerful (both politically and financially) branches of our governemt.they are smeared, they are attacked, they are blacklisted.
yet they represent the finest ideals of our country.
they stood up in the face of incredible odds, and poked goliath in the eye.
and they paid a price (especially during the Obama years).
so while the military propaganda machine would like you to think that Assange is a "criminal",and is being brought to "justice".
the reality is the exact opposite.
