They were offered asylum in Mexico and refused it. They're consistently being told to apply for asylum at the port of entry, but cross the border wherever they please. If you decide to hike 2,000km across desert, do not look for sympathy from me because you're stressed and traumatized. That's the kind of s**t one would expect from such a journey.
