I am guessing out loud the person you posted was a socialist politician in the US who ran for President on one of the third party tickets, but never had any real big support among any demographic because America was much more logical back then.

not bad,and kinda close.
that's eugene v debs.
socialist .
early 1900's

back then we had the socialists, the communists, democratic, republican, whigs (think the wobblies were gone by then iirc).

it is an interesting story.but debs commanded a large following,so much so that i believe it was Wilson who had him imprisoned to shut him up.eugene debs was supremely popular and posed a serious threat to the owner class.

if you look at the politics of the time, our country was far more diverse and politically educated than today.if you think about all the information at our fingertips...it;s kind of nuts.

dairy maids used to print their own newspapers.
people talked and debated politics all the time, and these were people with less then an 8th grade education!

this was also a turbulent time.this was the beginning of America's labor movement,Europe was starting to burn, massive inequality.

bah..don't get me started.
check out the story of eugene v debs though.it is interesting.

But Debs was before the Soviet Union. Most Americans changed their minds when they saw the realities of socialism. We had a Cold War and Joe McCarthy and fiercely anti-communist Presidents like Kennedy and Reagan.

and you were doing so well.

if ,as you say, most americans changed their minds when they saw the realities of socialism.

then explain sanders? aoc? rashib?

by your metric you cannot.
which puts you in a corner where the only exit is to either ridicule those who support sander etal,or declare them mentally deficient.

you kinda brushed over a really important stage in our history, and that is the MCcarthy era.that plays a big role in American attitudes towards communism/socialism and it wasn't ideological,it was fear.

and you also left out FDR,(who Bernie is actually more akin to) and his social democratic policies, social security, unemployment insurance, massive infrastructure policies.
FDR was so popular with the American people the republicans demanded presidential term limits, because the American people would have kept voting FDR into office.

i won't bore you anymore, but i will leave you with this:
American exceptionalism is really just a slogan for empire.the united states has always been about empire, from the very beginning.

not making a moral judgement here, just stating a basic fact.
which makes explaining the cold war a lot easier when you understand this.
Russia was reacting to US,not vice versa.

there are a lot of great historians that could do a far better job than i.

you alright buddy, hope i wasn't too much an ass to ya.
stay hating the democrats bud.

Well obviously they did change their minds and it lasted until recently. Obviously with the emerging new generations who didn’t live through the Soviet era they have become easier to manipulate which is why communism has made a comeback after 100 years. I would hardly say FDR was like Bernie Sanders. FDR left capitalism largely in tact. Sanders and AOC are fiercely anti-capitalist. After his massive landslide victory in ‘36, FDR also started to lose major support with each election. The 1944 election was much closer to the size of Barack Obama’s win in 2008 and Clinton’s re-election in 1996. In fact, Clinton was the first Democrat to be re-elected since FDR half a century earlier (and Clinton was running as a moderate third way Democrat). FDR would have probably been eventually voted out if he didn’t die suddenly. FDR also did some things that irked they socialist left.
