In the UK, "Chips" are fat/ chunky versions of french fries and you traditionally put salt and vinegar on them (or gravy or mushy peas) and traditionally accompanied by battered coated deep fried fish fillets, sausage or a savoury pie. What Americans call chips (e.g Lays) are called crisps in the UK. If you ever see a sign for "Fish and Chips", then you get the UK version of fat french fries and not the Lays type.
