I don't know that I would agree that they 'gave' anybody anything, but is true that many people today do not realize that the civil liberties of today are the result of 60's and 70's. Imagine fighting to achieve some huge victory like the Civil Rights Act only to have your grandkids' generation act like it's nothing. Yes, more work has to be done, but don't deny and disparage what has been done already.
