Some people will have to work without pay and will not get paid till the shutdown is over.
Furloughed people will not get paid and will be able to draw unemployment benefits after 1 week and then when the shutdown is over they will likely get back-pay.
How is this a good thing?

damagedgood,

The meme does not say that the shutdown is good or bad. But is sounds like somehow it struck one of your nerves. From my perspective, Three Quarters of the Federal spending bills have already passed the house, the senate, and have been signed into law. That leaves one quarter, affected by this shutdown. Of that one quarter, some of those employees are deemed ‘Essential’ and others are deemed ‘Non-Essential’.

So the Philosoraptor is pondering “Of the essential Employees, from the one remaining quarter affected by the shutdown, how many of them would have worked over the weekend, Christmas Eve, or Christmas, even if there was no shutdown”.

Now you didn’t ask, but as I mentioned, the meme seems to hit a nerve of yours. But here is what I see. There are all kinds of occupations in the United States, where the certainty of a pay-check is not guaranteed. There are people who fish for a living, there are farmers, and there are people whose employment is seasonal. Among other things, I for one, was a software contractor and a few times I walked into where I was supposed to be working, expecting that I would be there for another 76-12 months, and was told that several contract employees were being laid off, and that I was one of them.

Every year, Congress waits until the very last minute to try to hammer out spending and budget bills. And for many times over many different administrations, there have been government shutdowns. So anyone within government who does not know that this is an occupational job hazard of being a government employee, is denying the reality of history for many, many years. For some of those shutdowns there was a Democrat in the Oval Office, and for others there was a Republican in the Oval Office. Shutdowns happen frequently enough that everyone who is employed by the federal government ought to know that it is a possibility, and would be foolish not to plan for that possibility.

Lastly, for many of my software contacting jobs, I was contracted to the Federal government. I will say without hesitation, that the people who bitched the most about their working conditions were government employees who had never held a private sector job ever in their life. And while I saw lots of people trying to land government jobs, I did not see throngs of people wanting to get out of their own government job to seek the security, safety, and surety of a paycheck from the private sector.

No nerve of mine was hit at all by you or your meme.
I was merely pointing out that we will be paying for work that isn't done during the shutdown. And after the shutdown is over they likely will have to work overtime to get caught back up.
The government will likely pay them their wages for the missed time.

The shutdown ends up costing us more. Why are people pleased with that?

In every shutdown there are those who are pleased by those who stood for their conscience and held firm, and there are others who are very displeased. This shutdown is no different than any of the others.

And who has held firm in this instance?

Both sides have dug in their heels. For some people, they are glad that the Democrats are holding firm on their position regarding the border wall. For others, they are glad that Trump is standing firm on his request for border wall funding. Neither side seems willing to move off of their position. So Many Democrats are Happy, Many Democrats are Sad, Many Republins are Happy, and many Republicans are sad. Detente’ on both sides, ergo gridlock.

All I am saying is nobody should be happy since it just ends up costing us more money.
If 45 was such a good negotiator he could get what he wants without shutting down the government.
It is apparent a great negotiater he isn't

It takes at least 2 sides to negotiate.

It is obvious he isn't a great negotiater he just thinks he is. There is common ground available to deal with border control but it is his insistence that the only solution is a wall.
45 is the reason why there isn't any negotiation going on.

That is your opinion, and I respect that. I blame both the Republicans and the Democrats for not controlling that border throughout the years. The Republicans wanted the cheap labor. The Democrats wanted people who would eventually vote for Democrats. And because neither side was willing to do what a whole lot of people wanted (I.e., control the border) everything finally erupted, and that is why Mr. Trump is in the Whitehouse.

You want the illegals to stop coming to America. So do I.
Treat the disease and not the symptom. Lay blame wherever you want for the current situation. That doesn't help solve the problem going forward.
Elminate the reason they come in the first place. Jobs jobs jobs.
If they knew no jobs were available they wouldn't come in the first place.
Which would eliminate the need for a wall.
