damagedgood,
The meme does not say that the shutdown is good or bad. But is sounds like somehow it struck one of your nerves. From my perspective, Three Quarters of the Federal spending bills have already passed the house, the senate, and have been signed into law. That leaves one quarter, affected by this shutdown. Of that one quarter, some of those employees are deemed ‘Essential’ and others are deemed ‘Non-Essential’.
So the Philosoraptor is pondering “Of the essential Employees, from the one remaining quarter affected by the shutdown, how many of them would have worked over the weekend, Christmas Eve, or Christmas, even if there was no shutdown”.
Now you didn’t ask, but as I mentioned, the meme seems to hit a nerve of yours. But here is what I see. There are all kinds of occupations in the United States, where the certainty of a pay-check is not guaranteed. There are people who fish for a living, there are farmers, and there are people whose employment is seasonal. Among other things, I for one, was a software contractor and a few times I walked into where I was supposed to be working, expecting that I would be there for another 76-12 months, and was told that several contract employees were being laid off, and that I was one of them.
Every year, Congress waits until the very last minute to try to hammer out spending and budget bills. And for many times over many different administrations, there have been government shutdowns. So anyone within government who does not know that this is an occupational job hazard of being a government employee, is denying the reality of history for many, many years. For some of those shutdowns there was a Democrat in the Oval Office, and for others there was a Republican in the Oval Office. Shutdowns happen frequently enough that everyone who is employed by the federal government ought to know that it is a possibility, and would be foolish not to plan for that possibility.
Lastly, for many of my software contacting jobs, I was contracted to the Federal government. I will say without hesitation, that the people who bitched the most about their working conditions were government employees who had never held a private sector job ever in their life. And while I saw lots of people trying to land government jobs, I did not see throngs of people wanting to get out of their own government job to seek the security, safety, and surety of a paycheck from the private sector.
