Nationalism wasn't the sole cause of both world wars but it certainly contributed significantly. More significantly in World War 2 with World War 1 being for most countries just a shit show of tangled defense pacts. Nationalism more so contributed to the rise of fascism which i don't think can be argued was a major factor in WW2

A nationalist is just a patriot, except more patriotic

Patriotism: the quality of being patriotic; vigorous support for one's country.
Nationalism: an extreme form of Patriotism, especially marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries.
Nationalism is patriotism taken past healthy and safe limits

Putting the interests of Americans over the interests of Canadians doesn't automatically mean you think Canada should be carpet bombed out of existence.

My main beef with Nationalism is it can pretty easily lead to two really bad things One being the attacking of those who are seen as less (insert nationality here) such as Mccarthyism. The second being the dehumanization of anyone that isn't seen as (insert nationality here) which can lead to wars of conquest becoming more prevalent and the always fun war crimes.

That's one reason why America is the best. In most places, even the grandchildren of immigrants aren't seen as true, say, Algerians. In America, as long as they do it legally, immigrants are seen just as American as a full-blooded Choctaw.

What you are describing is "ethnic nationalism." That is similar to the Nazis. Most nationalists don't care if you came from Ukraine, Brazil, Poland,etc. Nationalists don't want to invade other "inferior" countries, they want a strong military to PROTECT their country.
