Call me crazy, but I think what happened is that the good doctor’s wife was a vampire victim who became one herself and she fed on (and ultimately, inadvertently killed their son). I have this head canon that his wife was the very first vampire Van Helsing has ever killed. And he dedicated his life to ridding the world of the foul Undead from that moment on.
