Take any firearm, load it, chamber a round, take it off safe, and set it down. It will not do anything until it is picked up and used in a manner that constitutes an assault. People do the assaulting with tools, tools don't assault people.

Even the dictionary only lists "Assault" as a Noun and a Verb. When the Noun is discussed, it describes actions being taken, which an inanimate object is incapable of doing without being in the hands of a person. There is no assault that is an adjective. So the words "assault rifle" isn't even proper English, since a noun can not describe a noun. And if you're referring to the verb, then it should be an "assaulting rifle" or an "assaulting spoon" or an assaulting toothpick.
