I use to worry about my Chihuahuas getting sprayed,when I lived out in the country & saw a skunk come out of a drainage ditch pipe.(& I did see it at night)
We had a skunk go between our houses like clockwork. Early evening one way (neighbor's dog would bark) and back again in the early a.m. Like working the night shift.
