If you are from a country on the continent of Africa, then one is African. Black people in the United States do not refer to themselves as African Americans today. They refer to themselves as black people and the black community. The correct response to this would be to answer, I am an American. Unless of course one is actually from the continent of Africa. If you are a citizen here, you are an American. Maybe we should just drop the whole black thing and the whole white thing and call citizens of the US what they truly are; Americans.
