I have no idea why this anecdote stuck in my brain... but several years back Rebecca Romijn (Original Mystique, former Model, ex Wife of Stamos)
was cast as a trans-Woman (I think that's how the terms work, Born male, body work to be Female) on Ugly Betty... a reporter asked her about "Playing a Man" or some such not sure if, like me here they didn't grasp the 'details' or what...
Romijn's reply was to the affect of "I'm playing a Woman. the character IS now a woman, and that's how I play 'her'."
If we are to believe the 'born in the wrong body', it's a Physical issue, Not a psychological issue etc...
Then should not the attention in Casting actors for for such roles be about the 'Result' and Not the Process.
also If you insist that casting be limited to real people within that subset are you not limiting the freedom of the Creators...
- say they Cast George Clooney in Avengers 4 as Thanos' Good Twin 'Clunos' or some such... come Avengers 6 the new writers decide 'Clunos' is Gay...
do you recast George Clooney with Sean Hayes?...
if he's struck Blind because a 'dark & Gritty' Dazzler uses her powers to close to his face should Stevie Wonder be hired to be covered in Purple CGI?
If Thanos drops a planet on his feet do you put out the casting call for paraplegic actors?
