There is a specific history behind the book, which is informative. Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia" tells his story as a Loyalist soldier during the Spanish civil war. During that time, he became disenchanted with the duplicity and lies of the Soviets. Later, "1984" served as a cautionary tale of the evils of socialism/communism, intended for those who might become under the sway of the Soviets. So "1984" not a neutral indictment of totalitarianism, contrary to popular belief. In the late 1940's, the USSR was perceived as the direct route to that unfortunate end. As for totalitarianism, there are many types of bait on that hook; socialism, communism, and various others. Consider Ernst Röhm, head of the SA under Hitler. Röhm was a socialist, and truly believed in the 'socialism' of 'national socialism.' It wasn't until he was apprehended - on Hitler's orders, just prior to his murder - that he understood how he'd been used to create a totalitarian state. Hopefully, no one will ever share the same fate.
