I think he admitted to being lonely in an episode. His duty to the ship and his crew forced him into a life of solitude. Unless you count every female that ever beamed aboard the Enterprise. Or the ones on planets below. I think it's a trade-off many would accept.
But church? Maybe. He went all the way to Shakaree to visit God in person. Of course there was Spock's half-brother Sybok who came up with the idea first.
