A little of both to be honest 🙈 Since I haven't really used the little bits of Dutch I've learned I'm always a bit unsure if I'm using it correctly so I check with Google or something first... 🙈

That sentence was correct... Although loads of Dutchies might say it like this: "Kan ik Jeroen spreken?" but either way is fine, two different way to say the same thing... ;)

Ok, I intuitively wanted to write that... 😅 But then I looked it up and it sounded like something I would've learned in my Dutch course and so I wrote that. 🙈 I guess, I should really use it more and get a feel for it.

Definitely.... Since English is my second language, can you imagine how horrible my English was the first time I tried to speak it? And now I appear to manage pretty well... It's because the internet practically forces me to...
(That and I prefer to turn the Dutch translation subtitles off when I watch DVD of movies in English. The translations are often horrible, and distracting).

Yeah, same... Took me a few years to get comfortable enough to talk to anyone in English. But watching movies in the English original really helps. The German translations usually suck as well, so I don't watch them at all anymore... If only there was a similar opportunity to watch stuff in Dutch or Swedish... I would be so much further along in speaking them. 😅 But mostly you can only find talk shows and I can't really watch those for any length of time... I mean... in Swedish there are all the Astrid Lindgren adaptations at least... Is there anything similar for the Netherlands?

A lot of stuff in the Dutch langue does rarely make it pass the border... Well the Belgian border maybe (since they speak Dutch there too, at least the Northern half does). There are some Dutch films you may wanna look up. Like "Flodder" (comedy about a very anti-social family living in a high-society neighborhood), "De Lift" (horror movie about an elevator killing people), "De Cock en de moord in extase" (detective movie, about a murder on a money transporter, and famous detective De Cock and his assistant Vledder have to solve the case). "Amsterdamned" (Thriller/horror about a serial killer in Amsterdam). Or when you want something simple "Pluk van de Petteflat" may do, based on a children's book by Annie M.G. Schmidt, who is pretty similar in the NL wat Lindgren is in Sweden. There's hardly a human being in the Netherlands who didn't grow up with her work. Nice to note is that the mayor in that latter movie is portrayed by a former Dutch minister (Erika Terpstra). When it comes to children's shows, perhaps you should look up Studio 100, which is a Belgian studio (so they speak with a Belgian accent, and a few Belgian words are not common in the Netherlands), but it can still be a nice way to train Dutch. and some shows are even amusing for adults.

And if you want a very good (yet very old, so some references are a bit outdated) sitcom from Dutch origin (in the Dutch language) "Zeg eens AAA" is a nice choice, about a doctor and her family and her (somewhat clumsy) house keeper and the housekeeper's husband who is really into fixing stuff. Back in the 1980s everybody was watching that....

And at the start of every new year, we have this show called "Wie is de Mol?" A game in which 10 candidates must fulfill tasks, however, one of them is "de Mol" who secretly sabotages all tasks, and tries to turn everything into a failure. The main task for the candidates (and the viewers at home) is to unmask this "Mol". Perhaps a very nice way to train Dutch and to pain your brain trying to figure out who that "Mol" is (I manage to unmask the Mol last year, but sometimes it's really really difficult).

Oh wow, that's a lot of suggestions. 😊 I actually know the Flodders but I haven't been able to watch them in the original yet. I will look up a bunch of these and maybe that'll help my Dutch a bit. 🙈 Thank you so much! ♥️

Well mostly it doesn't end when one of the actor dies during a life performance to celebrate the anniversary of series, but quality going downhill, yeah, that's not something Flodder is unique for, indeed...

Some people I know speak of the horrible disease called "sequelistis".... The sick desire to make a sequel for the sake of having a sequel, which is solely supposed to pull the money out of the audience's pocket. And I think it's a very nice word to go viral, as I must agree.... sequelitis is a very horrible disease.

Oh, I'm gonna use that from now on. Sequelitis. XD

Yeah the series of Flodder is pretty crappy. The original movie (and maybe still its sequel: Flodder in Amerika) did pretty well under the Dutch audience. After that the actor playing Johnny resigned and was replaced by somebody else, and then it went downhill, and the series were even less good, and suddenly stopped when one of the actors died instantly during festivities around the series (heart failure).
