Did you not read my previous comments?
Here, let me spell it out for you. Gay people have always been able to marry someone of the opposite sex. That’s because marriage has always been defined that way until recently. Now, people have tried to redefine “marriage” to include same sex couples and the Supreme Court mandated this new definition.
Thus my meme saying siblings can get married - just not to each other . . . until enough people convince the Supreme Court to allow that too.

This argument that "gay people have always been able to get married...to someone of the opposite sex" is either incredibly asinine, or incredibly dishonest. Gay people didn't fight for the ability to marry someone of the opposite sex, and you know it.

By your logic, Saudi Arabia has complete freedom of religion, because people are completely free to worship Allah as much as they want.

The problem is, they redefined marriage in an attempt to legitimize homosexual relationships. Most states already granted (or were in the process of granting) the same rights to same sex couples as they do to married couples. But that wasn’t good enough. They wanted the “marriage” title, as if that would somehow force everyone to see same sex “married” couples the same as traditional married couples. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your point of view) that hasn’t worked.
reply

Yes, they redefined marriage...so what? Marriage was invented by humans, and we can define it however we wish. It's the same with money. When bitcoin was invented, did you accuse people of "redefining money"?

"Most states already granted...the same rights to same sex couples as they do to married couples. But that wasn't good enough"

You're absolutely right, it wasn't good enough. Just like "separate but equal" wasn't good enough. Colored drinking fountains weren't good enough. Colored waiting rooms weren't good enough. Colored lunch counters weren't good enough. Why? Because separate but equal wasn't good enough. And that's what you wanted gay couples to accept: separate but equal.

No one can force a person to accept same sex marriage. If someone doesn't like it, that's their right. But just because some people don't want to accept it, that's not a good enough reason to prohibit it.
reply

Bit coin didn’t redefine money. That’s like saying confederate script redefined money. It’s just another medium of exchange.

You’re trying to equate race with behavior. Nobody was prohibiting same sex couples from using the same fountains, waiting rooms or lunch counters as married couples.
Why not redefine the title “PHD” to include anyone who spends the same time and money but isn’t accademically inclined to pass the tests? Then everyone can be entitled to that title. Why? Because it cheapens what the title means.

After the Netherlands started recognizing same sex “marriages” a couple decades ago, they noticed a decline in the number of young couples getting married at all - heteral or homosexual. It’s because the marriage had become meaningless to them. The same thing is happening in the US.

"You’re trying to equate race with behavior."

I'm equating one trait with another trait. Sexual orientation is not a behavior. A behavior is something you do. It's an action. Finding someone attractive is not a choice you make or an action you do. Just like being straight is not a behavior.

"Nobody was prohibiting same sex couples from using the same fountains, waiting rooms or lunch counters as married couples."

No, just denying gay people jobs and housing. Oh, and by the way, that's still legal in a number of states. If you're trying to say that gay people don't face discrimination in the United States, you're just flat-out wrong.

Your PhD analogy makes no sense at all. If someone doesn't earn a PhD, it's because they didn't do the work required. Getting married is not like earning a college degree. Also, to say that gay marriage "cheapens" what marriage means is your opinion, not a fact.

If you can show me an actual link between gay marriage being legalized and straight couples not getting married as often, I'd like to see it. And I mean an actual link, a definite causal relationship, not a correlation or a post hoc fallacy.
0 ups, 6m
Being attracted to someone else isn’t the behavior, it’s acting on that attraction. Married Heterosexuals are attracted to the opposite sex all the time. It doesn’t mean they should act on that attractions. Even though adultery isn’t illegal, it’s still immoral, as is homosexuality. What about people who are only sexually attracted to immediate family members? Should sibling marriages be legalized? How about underage marriage. Is denying underage couples the right to marry “ageism”? How about polygamy, beastiality, etc?

Denying gay people the rights you stated is discrimination. But not calling same sex couples “married” isn’t discrimination.

The PHD analogy is to show how restricting titles to certain groups isn’t discrimination - like denying the title of “marriage” to same sex couples isn’t. Saying it’s unfair to deny gay people the right to be married is like saying it’s unfair to deny a PHD to someone because they are not accademically inclined - they were born that way, not their choice - see the analogy?

The info about the Netherlands came from a seminar I attended several years ago. It was before US states started to recognize same sex marriages. Sorry, but not every bit of info is posted on the Internet.

"Even though adultery isn’t illegal, it’s still immoral, as is homosexuality."

Please explain how homosexuality is inmoral, and also please explain what your standard of morality is.

I've never heard of anyone ever who was only attracted to immediate family members, so that doesn't even sound like an actual thing. And prohibitions against incest are partly due to demonstrable harm that reproduction from such relationships produces.

The same goes for underage marriage (you know, like they had in the Bible, where girls were married off as soon as they hit puberty, which was "underage" by today's standards). Sex with young children has been demonstrated to cause harm to them, that's why it is and should be illegal.

Polygamy? You mean like they had in the Bible? Jacob had multiple wives, Esau had multiple wives, I believe Gideon had multiple wives, Solomon had hundreds of wives. Was any of that prohibited? Bestiality is also shown to have harmful effects, which is why it is also illegal.

All of these are, of course, red herrings, since we weren't talking about any of those topics, only same-sex marriage.

You can say that same-sex marriage isn't really marriage, but you're wrong. Like I said earlier, humans created it and we define it. Saying that same-sex marriage isn't marriage is like saying a veggie burger isn't food. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't that thing.

The PhD analogy is very weak, because marriage is not something you earn. It is available to every adult. A PhD is something you earn. A marriage license is never denied to someone because they aren't smart enough or attractive enough or rich enough.

I'm curious: the Bible explicitly prohibits interfaith marriages. Do you think they should be illegal as well?

Since you bring up the Bible, then you should understand that marriage was not created by man, but by God. Adam and Eve were husband and wife. Secular society adopted the practice. That’s why fornication and adultery was illegal at one time. Secular society has, and continues to, abandon the principles taught by God’s prophets. Most of our laws were based on biblical teaching, originally.

Homosexuality falls in the same category as adultery, fornication, and is considered an impure practice. Like adulatory, it was once illegal and homosexual marriages were a perversion.

Yes, polygamy was practiced in biblical times. It was also practiced in modern times and currently practiced openly in some places and not so openly in the US. There were practical reasons for it. For example, women used to not be able to own land. There were more women than men so, if a woman’s husband died, she needed to be married to avoid being evicted and polygamy fit the bill while still adhering to God’s law.

As far as marriage not being something you earn, I have to disagree with that too. Marriage is something you earn and have to work at to keep it working. Of course today couples tend to get divorced as if it’s just another stage of their relationship - many times due to adultery.

Families are the building blocks of society and have been under attack for decades. Talk about causing harm to others, think about what is happening to society due to the collapse of families with a mother and father to rear children. We’ve resorted to letting schools and TV do all the teaching because we’re preoccupied with sex, money, drugs, etc. Same sex marriage is just another stab at families and, thus, society as a whole.

I understand that the Bible *says* marriage was created by god, but since I'm an atheist, I don't believe that.

"Secular society has, and continues to, abandon the principles taught by God’s prophets."

Yes, and that's why we have freedom of religion in this country. There is no freedom of religion in the Bible.

"Most of our laws were based on biblical teaching, originally."

Just because this country shares some laws with the Bible like not murdering or stealing, it doesn't mean we got them directly from the Bible. Cultures all over the world have similar laws, and they didn't get them from the Bible.

"Like adulatory, (homosexuality) was once illegal and homosexual marriages were a perversion."

So were interracial marriages. Should we make them illegal again?

You seem to misunderstand my point. Marriage in not something you earn in the sense of having to study, research and pass tests in order to get a marriage license. You can't just walk into a college and purchase a PhD (unless you're Kent Hovind). You can walk into a courthouse and purchase a marriage license. Yes, marriages take lots of work. But that's not what I was referring to.

"Families are the building blocks of society..."

No, individuals are.

When you say families are under attack, I don't see it. I see people doing things differently than some people are used to, and that frightens and upsets them. That's not the same as actually being under attack.

"Same sex marriage is just another stab at families and, thus, society as a whole."

I guess you'll have to explain what you mean by that, because it makes no sense to me. Letting people marry someone of the same sex is attacking families? How so?

But you didn't really answer my other questions. You said homosexuality is "considered an impure practice". How so? Please explain how homosexuality is inmoral, and also please explain what your standard of morality is.

Like I said, I'm curious: the Bible explicitly prohibits interfaith marriages. Do you think they should be illegal as well?
1 up, 6m
“I understand that the Bible *says* marriage was created by god, but since I'm an atheist, I don't believe that.”

That’s a convenient copout. Since you don’t believe in God, prophets, scripture, etc. my standard of immorality won’t make any sense to you. Maybe you should look to the health issues involved since you don’t think people’s behavior should be bridled unless it directly hurts someone else.

Some of them are actually dumb enough to believe that everyone online who supports Donald Trump are Russian bots. They think that nobody could actually have voted for Trump and the only way he could have possibly been elected is by some type of foreign interference. In this case, Russia. They can't get over the fact that someone they don't support is running the country.

Other users I believe are just joking about it. Or they're just trying to get a rise out of people. I play along sometimes because I like to argue in the comments, because I get bored just commenting on memes with jokes from time to time.

If you haven't noticed, all this "Russian bot" business started right after the leftist mainstream like CNN and MSNBC had idiots on claiming that the internet is being infiltrated by Russian bots and are getting people to fight with each other and divide us.

Bunch of stupid claims, but it makes it more interesting arguing with them.

Yeah, I get what your saying, and I agree, but the real reason isn't for the environment only, its money, because if it was for the environment ,then big fast food restaurants wouldn't be allowed to give away straws freely, and there should be a strict law on anything plastic that would just be thrown away. But its only on straws, it should be on many things, mabye their just trying to start small? However I do think the law should be fair and equal, that both fast food chains and the local restaurants will abide by the same rules.
