Wait, who is this guy? He looks a little like Michael J. Fox and also the guy from Knight Rider, but not enough. :-)

Rowdy Roddy Piper in "They Live". If you haven't seen it you may want to, it's a classic! :)

Looks interesting; I just watched the trailer. I've been searching for a free version, as it is not on Amazon streaming. The search continues...

Thank for the suggestion! :-)

OK, so I saw the movie and enjoyed the hell out of it. Now I know where the gum joke originated - the bank scene.

The social message is just as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. Maybe even more. John Carpenter did a great job, as usual.

Roddy Piper was convincing - probably had a lot of practice acting in the ring. But that fistfight was brutal. I thought it would never end!

The other main character (Frank) looks familiar. I must have seen him in other movies, but I can't remember where.

I'm surprised I've never heard of this movie; I'm a big Sci-Fi fan. But I'm glad I finally got to see it - thanks for the recommendation. Now we're even for the fan-based Trek links. :-)

My only issue with the movie was the lady from the TV station. She was a little wooden, maybe just needed an acting lesson or two. Otherwise, everyone else pulled their weight and made it feel convincing all the way through.

The title seems more like a throwback to a 50's flick than a perfect fit for this one, so I think the people who named it were fans of the genre.

The movie left me with a few questions, too. Who's on those other planets? What is the story with life in the galaxy, and what happens in the future? Does humanity earn their place out there with the aliens?

Please tell me there a sequel! :-)

So glad you liked it. As far as I know there was no sequel, but there really should have been. I saw it when it first came out and loved it. I was never a big wrestling fan, but I knew who Roddy Piper was and I agree that he did an excellent job. The story goes that John Carpenter looked at Roddy and said, "Roddy, you've got bullets on you, you've got a shotgun, you've got sunglasses, you go into a bank, you're not going to rob it, say something...action" and Roddy says, "I'm all out of bubblegum"

I've never seen Roddy Piper wrestle, but I'd heard his name. I watched a little wrestling waaay back when Bruno Samartino was the champ, but not for long. Anyway, I do like John carpenter movies. My favorite is probably The Thing (remake). I also liked Escape From New York. I saw the original Halloween, but not the rest of them. Also liked Starman, but forget the plot from Laura Mars. It was too long ago.

Someone had shown me this clip a while back; now I know where they got the inspiraqtion:

I saw Roddy wrestle a couple of times, but I've never been a huge wrestling fan. The first I remember is Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. About 12 years ago my son got into wrestling for a couple of years and I ended up watching Smackdown every Friday (Rey Mysterio and company). "They Live" is hands down my favorite John Carpenter movie, but I really liked "Christine" and some others. I haven't seen "The Thing", but it looks like it's the critics' choice. :)

I would list 'They Live' as a close number two but 'The Thing' is my favorite John Carpenter movie. This one would be hard to beat. It's available online so if you get a chance, check it out. :-)

OK, let me know what you think. It's close to the original version (in black and white), so if you've already seen that you know what to expect.

In a way it reminded me of Alien. There's a great build up.

I've probably seen John Carpentrer's version 2 or three times and I plan on watching it again. Like you, I'll have to find a suitable opening, as I prefer to watch good movies in one sitting. :-)
