Reminds me of the story of a man who lived next to the Mississippi. One day the river flooded, threatening his house. As he was sitting on his veranda watching the waters rise, a boat came by and offered him help. "No thanks," he said, "The Good Lord will save me!"
The waters rose more, forcing him to go indoors and up to the second floor. Another boat came by and the people in it offered to save him. Once more, he replied, "I put my trust in God, He will save me!"
The waters rose even more and he climbed out onto his roof. A helicopter came by and the pilot called down, "Hey, grab on to the rope! We have room for one more!" He politely turned them down, once more stating that he put his faith in God, and that He would provide.
Of course the man ended up drowning and went to Heaven. He met with God and asked Him, "My Lord, all my life I trusted in you. Why didn't you save me?"
"Save you??" replied God. "I sent you two boats and a helicopter, how much salvation do you need?"
