because you're still "Living Apart" from the other people in your building... most places referred to as 'Apartments' have a minimal common area ... while 'sleeping rooms' boarding houses and other similar residence options tend to have more shared features, ala a single toilet/bathing room for the entire floor... or a shared Kitchen...
