(I used to ride. ) "Lane splitting" is legal in California, for example. But it has to be on a freeway, the traffic stopped or nearly stopped, and not more than ~10 mph over the cars. It doesn't mean ripping through with loud-ass exhaust and weaving in and out. Sometimes when the rider is stopped at a traffic light they may want to duck in between the lanes temporarily to avoid getting rear-ended.

In California, lane splitting helps with traffic congestion and helps some air-cooled motorcycles avoid overheating :).

Can’t stand it and I ride. Seen too many accidents that way!
